1996 – Age 11

RIB-IT! programme

(Read In Bed – It’s Terrific!)

I found my old RIB-IT record in a box of old school stuff – every book I read in the school year of 1996! In New Zealand this is year 7 (it was called Form 1 when I was that age, and I believe Standard 5 in my parents’ time). It’s the first year of intermediate school (the two years between Primary and Secondary (or High) School). I was 11 for most of the year, and turned 12 in September (NZ school year runs Feb-Dec with summer holidays at Christmas time).

This page also works as a list of books recommended for 11 year-olds. I’ll start with the ones recommended by the programme – (I was that kid who read them all, then filled pages with extra books I read. My teacher had to make up new awards for me, because the programme only had certificates up to 50 books) – then list the extra ones I picked up over the year.

If it has a ♥ next to it, 11 year-old-me thought it was great!

So the programme was designed to get reluctant readers interested by showing them that there are different books to suit everyone, and to encourage reading as a daily activity. Parents were asked to help by encouraging children to read in bed for half an hour before sleeping every night. This obviously wasn’t something I needed, but I relished the challenge. I do recall both of my parents telling me it was late, and I should ‘turn the light off now’ numerous times. I’d switch my lamp off and read with a torch under the bed covers!

  1. glad you liked my book when you were eleven

    • Wow, thanks for commenting. I’m always a bit awestruck when I meet authors. Books are so special! Thanks for visiting my blog – it’s not very active, obviously, but it’s my little corner of the interwebs.
